Chandigarh Dispute Sparks Demand for Special Assembly Session in Haryana

Haryana’s opposition demands an immediate special Assembly session, accusing the BJP government of failing to protect the state’s rights on key issues including the future of Chandigarh, unresolved SYL canal water sharing, and land allocation for a new Assembly complex. The call highlights rising political pressure over long-pending interstate concerns.

Opposition parties in Haryana have intensified pressure on the state government, urging it to convene an immediate special session of the Legislative Assembly to address what they describe as a deepening crisis over Chandigarh’s status and other unresolved interstate issues. They accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of failing to safeguard Haryana’s longstanding rights and interests.

According to opposition leaders, the state government has been unable to secure land for the construction of a new Haryana Assembly complex—an issue pending for years. They further allege that, despite clear directives from the Supreme Court, the government has not succeeded in ensuring Haryana’s rightful share of water through the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, a matter that remains a persistent flashpoint between Haryana and Punjab.

The future of Chandigarh—currently serving as the shared capital of both states—has also become a central point of contention. The opposition argues that the Centre has yet to clarify whether Chandigarh will continue as a joint capital or transition into a full-fledged Union Territory with exclusive federal administration. This ambiguity, they claim, has created uncertainty and weakened Haryana’s bargaining position.

Opposition members insist that these unresolved issues demand a thorough and urgent debate within the Assembly. A special session, they say, is essential not only to review the government’s performance but also to chart a clear strategy on matters that carry long-term implications for the state’s political, administrative, and resource-related future.
